Certification through the Royal College represents the highest standard for specialty medical education. Recognition of training and/or practice by the Royal College is often required for licensure to practice as a specialist in Canada.

This Certification Examiner Onboarding learning activity is provided to volunteers of the examination and exam development process prior to the annual exams. This learning activity helps to ensure the certification examinations are fair, valid and of the highest quality.

This modified version of the full program is available to anyone with an interest in examiner training and consists of 7 modules. Validity, Exam Quality, Basic Psychometrics, as well as creating MCQ, SAQ, Oral and OSCE questions. Each module starts with a short, self-assessment exercise and ends with a quiz to check your understanding. In order to claim full MOC Section 3 credits, the mastery quiz must be completed.

Learning Outcomes

The online modules focus on the competencies required to:

  • Define the purpose of the Royal College examinations.
  • Outline the key elements of good assessment and apply them within your specialty examination.
  • Describe the main roles and responsibilities of an examiner in delivering fair and valid exams.
  • Outline the steps supporting validity evidence for the Royal College examination.
  • Outline the principles for constructing good rating scales.
  • Discuss the advantages of a global rating scale over a checklist and recognize that the Royal College uses two different types of global rating scales (holistic and analytic).
  • Define the principles of rater calibration and outline how it applies to Royal College examinations.
  • Distinguish between criterion-referenced and norm-referenced examinations
  • Interpret the examination performance (both at the individual item and the overall examination level) using the psychometric data provided by the Examination Quality and Analytics (EQA) team.
  • Understand the basic principles of Classical Test Theory including the role of reliability.
  • Adhere to the Royal College policies and practices that relate to the examinations.
  • Recognize the characteristics of a well-constructed questions and develop skills in critiquing and developing items
  • Create well-constructed questions and cases for Royal College examinations.
  • List the factors that influence the effective administration of a case and the impact on validity evidence.

CME Accreditation

This program is an Accredited Self-Assessment Program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and approved by the Royal College CPD Unit. You may claim a maximum of 5 hours (credits are automatically calculated).

Time Commitment

The online modules take about 3-5 hours to complete. You do not need to complete all of it in one session. You can logout of the system and return later. Your progress will be saved automatically.

You will have 1 year to access and complete the modules from time of purchase.
